11kV Switchgear Specification Checklist for Contractors and EPC Projects

For contractors, EPC teams, and industrial project owners, a clear 11kV switchgear specification prevents costly revisions after quotation. The cabinet, breaker, protection relay, and cable arrangement must be selected as one coordinated system.

1. Confirm the electrical ratings

Start with the single-line diagram. State the rated voltage, frequency, rated normal current, and the prospective short-circuit level. For a typical 11kV project, the manufacturer also needs the required short-time withstand current and duration, because these values affect the busbar, breaker, and internal-arc design.

  • Rated voltage: 11kV or the project system voltage
  • Frequency: 50Hz or 60Hz
  • Rated current: incomer, busbar, and each outgoing feeder
  • Fault level: required short-circuit withstand and breaking capacity
  • Network arrangement: single busbar, bus section, double busbar, or ring network

2. Define the panel lineup

Specify how many incoming panels, feeder panels, bus-section panels, metering panels, and transformer feeder panels are required. A one-line diagram should show the source, transformer, loads, cable routes, and any future extension space. This allows the supplier to prepare a practical lineup instead of a generic cabinet proposal.

3. Specify protection and control

Protection requirements should be written before the design is released. Typical requirements include overcurrent, earth fault, undervoltage, breaker failure, trip-circuit supervision, local and remote control, and SCADA communication. State the protection relay preference, current-transformer and voltage-transformer ratios, auxiliary voltage, and protocol such as Modbus or IEC 61850 where applicable.

4. Review safety and installation conditions

For indoor metal-clad switchgear, confirm the room dimensions, cable-entry direction, altitude, ambient temperature, humidity, pollution conditions, and seismic requirements. Ask about mechanical interlocks, earthing switch operation, shutters, pressure-relief arrangements, and the applicable IEC standard. These details affect both personnel safety and serviceability.

5. Request the right quotation package

A useful quotation should include the panel schedule, technical data sheet, general arrangement drawing, single-line diagram confirmation, bill of materials, delivery terms, and recommended spare parts. Before production, confirm the factory acceptance test scope and documentation required for shipment.
