12kV Vacuum Circuit Breaker Selection Checklist for Switchgear Buyers

Start with the switchgear, not only the voltage

For a 12kV medium-voltage project, the vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) must match the panel arrangement, operating duty and protection scheme. A suitable breaker is selected from the complete switchgear requirement—not from one rating alone.

Five items to confirm before requesting a quotation

  • Rated voltage and frequency: confirm the system rating, usually 12kV for indoor MV distribution.
  • Rated current: match the feeder or transformer load requirement.
  • Short-circuit duty: specify required breaking current and short-time withstand current.
  • Installation arrangement: identify whether the breaker is fixed or withdrawable, and confirm panel compatibility.
  • Control and auxiliaries: confirm control voltage, closing/tripping coils, interlocks and required auxiliary contacts.

Why panel compatibility matters

A VCB works as part of a complete switchgear system. Dimensions, primary contacts, shutter mechanism, secondary plug and interlocks must align with the KYN28 or other panel design. Sharing the panel drawing or existing breaker information early helps avoid mismatched configurations.

Prepare a clear RFQ

Include system voltage, current, fault level, panel type, quantity, destination market and any project drawings. This lets the supplier recommend the correct configuration and prepare a more accurate quotation.
