A 12kV ring main unit (RMU) should be specified around the distribution scheme it must serve. Before comparing cabinet models, establish the feeder layout, protection arrangement, electrical ratings and site conditions. A clear single-line diagram makes these decisions easier to review with a supplier.
1. Define the feeder layout
Mark the incoming and outgoing ring feeders, transformer feeder and any metering or circuit-breaker position. State whether the equipment is for a ring network, terminal distribution point or compact substation. Show the number of panels and their connections on the single-line diagram. If the scheme is still being designed, identify the positions that remain to be confirmed.
2. Confirm the electrical ratings
Provide the system voltage and frequency, required rated current and short-circuit withstand level from the project design. A model name containing “12kV” does not confirm that every current or fault-duty requirement is met. The supplier should check the selected configuration against the complete rating schedule.
3. Match switching and protection to each feeder
Describe the duty of each feeder before selecting the switching arrangement. A transformer feeder may call for a different protection arrangement from a ring feeder. State whether a load-break-switch, switch-fuse or circuit-breaker function is specified, and provide the project protection requirements. Do not assume these functions are interchangeable.
4. Choose the RMU construction for the project
Enertro lists different 12kV RMU products. The HXGN17-12 indoor metal-enclosed ring main unit is a fixed-type design for ring-network and terminal distribution applications; its published options include load-break-switch and switch-fuse configurations. The RM6-C 12kV gas-insulated RMU is listed as a fully enclosed, modular alternative. Share the installation conditions and required feeder functions so Enertro can advise which published model and configuration fits the project.
5. Check installation and interfaces
Confirm whether the installation is indoors or outdoors, the available footprint, cable-entry direction, termination details and any space constraints. Record metering, operating indication, interlocking, control and remote-monitoring requirements where applicable. These options should be stated in the request for quotation rather than assumed from a catalogue photo.
12kV RMU request-for-quotation checklist
Send the following information when requesting a technical quotation:
- Single-line diagram, feeder functions and panel quantity.
- Rated voltage, frequency, current and short-circuit withstand requirement.
- Specified switching and protection function for each feeder.
- Installation location, ambient conditions and available space.
- Cable entry, termination, metering and control requirements.
- Destination market and project-specific documentation requirements.
If a value is not yet decided, mark it “to be confirmed” and explain the design stage. That allows the open questions to be resolved before a final configuration is quoted.
